Day 1: Hanoi
March 10th, 2008
Distance travelled today: 0 km
Current Mood:
The tour kicks off in Hanoi with the Uninam riders arriving at various times over the last few days. We are staying at Hoa Binh Palace hotel, which is in the old quarters of Hanoi. It is a block from a lake and is full of quaint old colonial buildings.
The streets are crazy, with thousands of motorists going in every possible direction. Definitely not for the faint hearted, although some brave unicyclists did venture out into the traffic. Some of our riders even went for a night ride through the streets of Hanoi, getting very lost in the process.
There is all manner of people selling strange and often unidentifiable foods by the roadside and in the market. Everything from live wriggling crabs, to pig feet and pickled snakes...you name it, you can buy it!
Many of us become instant millionaires when we change our currency to Vietnamese Dong. Our bargaining skills are put to the test when we haggle for stuff on the street.
A large group of riders who arrived early head out to Halong Bay which is about three hours drive away. They spend the night on a boat before returning to Hanoi.
We meet for dinner at a restaurant and then head to bed for an early night (4am start tomorrow!).
