Day 3 Hanoi to Lang Co
We started
the day again with another early start, with breakfast at 6.30am. We set off from the hotel through the
streets of Hue, weaving our way through the busy traffic.
After
several km’s, we were thankful to turn down a quiet backroad. We rode past several villages, with many
wide eyed stares as we went past, followed by shrieks, and then little kids
chasing after us! The backroad took us
through many rice fields. Curiously,
many of these fields had large burial plots and memorials rising out of them,
and doubled up as a cemetery.
The roads
were bumpy, but for most riders, the large Coker wheels smoothed out the
bumps. It wasn’t long before we needed
a break however, as the flat terrain meant that saddle pain was particularly
problematic. We stopped every 20km,
with the support vehicle setting up food and refueling stops. At each rest stop, locals would come out and
check out our unicycles.
After 60km
of flat riding, we finally get to the hilly section. Lunch was at a hilltop restaurant with stunning views of the
lower plains. The food was quickly
devoured by twenty six hungry unicyclists, before they set off on the final
20km stretch to our hotel.
This final
stretch was probably the craziest.
Traffic was heavy and had little respect for little things on the side
of the road. Trucks with airhorns
blasted out for supremacy in along the highway. He who has the biggest horn, usually has the biggest truck…get
out of the way!!! We kept on the edge
of the road as much as we could.
We arrived
at the Lang Co beach resort, tired, sticky and glad to have finished our first
real ride. We were greeted with a much
needed cold tea and wet teatowel. It
was a beautiful resort, right next to the beach. It wasn’t long before we all ran into the water to cool
down. Several of our riders have their
aches and pains massaged away by the local women on the beach (they charge
$5/halfhr).
Dinner was
another multiple course affair, and we were all well fed by the time we
collapse into bed that night.
